About the programme

Do you offer specialisation in your MBA programme?

We offer specialisations in Islamic Banking, General Management, Finance and Strategic Management.

Where and when are the classes held? What is the duration of the MBA programme?

MBA part-time students attend classes from 3.00 pm to 6.30 pm on Saturdays and 9.00 am to 12.30 pm on Sundays. MBA full-time students attend weekday classes from 6.30 pm to 10.00pm between Monday to Friday.

All MBA classes are held at our main campus in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. The MBA programme lasts between 18 months to 3 years (full-time) or 30 months to 5 years (part-time).

What is the medium of instruction for the programme?

The medium of instruction for the programme is English.

Do I have to take Arabic Language?

No.

Admission

What are the basic requirements for admission to the MBA programme?

Candidates for the MBA programme are expected to have a degree recognised by the Malaysian Government, or by the IIUM Senate, as the minimum entry requirement. Candidates are also expected to have a minimum of 2 years working experience after obtaining the first degree.

International candidates must provide proof of English Language Proficiency, either IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL of 213 (computer based) or 550 (paper based) to be considered for admission.

In exceptional circumstances, the Centre may consider waiving the job experience requirement for candidates who have a CGPA of 3.00 (or equivalent) for entry into the MBA full-time only.

Can I apply if I do not have a basic degree but hold a professional qualification?

Candidates who hold professional qualifications that are recognised by Malaysian law to be equivalent to a degree (ex: ACCA, CIMA, ICSA, MACPA) may apply for the Master’s programme.

Is working experience required to apply for this programme?

Two years working experience is required for applicants.

I do not have TOEFL or IELTS. Can I still apply?

Not having TOEFL or IELTS will severely impact your chances of being accepted into the MBA programme. However, candidates who do not have either IELTS or TOEFL may be instructed to sit for an English Placement Test (EPT) in IIUM. A score of 6.0 is required to pass the EPT. Students who do not obtain a score of 6.0 will be required to sit for pre-sessional English classes at CELPAD, IIUM.

When are the intakes for the MBA programme? What is the class size?

MBA part-time: March and July
MBA full-time: July and November

Class size is approximately 30-35 students.

How do I apply?

Is there any interview?

All MMgt and MBA candidates will be interviewed either in person or by phone.

Is the programme opened to non-Muslims?

Yes, the programme is open to non-Muslims.

Enrolment

Can I defer my enrolment once I have been offered a place in the programme?

You may postpone your enrolment on the condition that you pay the registration fee as indicated in your offer letter.


I am an international student. How do I apply for a student visa?

The Management Centre will apply on your behalf for a student pass. The student pass will allow you to enter Malaysia for 30 days. Once you have registered at the Centre, you may apply for a permanent student visa (renewable annually) at the International Student Division office, IIUM.

Financing and Payment

Is there any financial assistance?

The Management Centre offers the Rector’s Fellowships every year to deserving candidates. The fellowships cover tuition, living expenses, and on campus housing. This fellowship is opened to both local and international candidates.

Other than that, Malaysian candidates may consider withdrawing part of their Employee Provident Fund (EPF) savings or apply for PTPTN or MARA educational loan.

International candidates can apply for Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) scholarship.


How much is the total fees of the MBA programme? Do I pay the full amount at the beginning of the course?

Students pay an initial registration fee (as indicated below), after which, they will be charged
according to the number of subjects registered per semester.

Accommodation

Is accommodation provided for international students or for students from outside the Klang valley?.

Yes. The following housing options are available:

i. On - campus accommodation is limited to the elite housing units which are semi-furnished.
Rental is RM 510 monthly, not inclusive of utilities (electricity). Upgraded units with
additional facilities are available for rent at RM600 per month.

ii. Off - campus in Putra Villa apartment or private accommodations in the Gombak area.

Where should I stay upon arriving at the University?

Students are advised to confirm their housing arrangements before arriving in Kuala Lumpur. Please note that for students staying on-campus, hostel keys are only given during office hours (Monday – Friday 8.00 pm to 5.00 pm) at the Student Affairs Division (STAD) office. If you are arriving outside office hours, please arrange to stay in a hotel or with friends, temporarily.

No.

Where and when are the classes held? . What is the duration of the MMgt programme?

All MMgt classes are held at our main campus in Gombak, Selangor. Both full-time and part-time students attend weekday classes from 6.30 pm to 10.00 pm between Monday to Friday.

The duration of study is 12 months (3 semesters) for full-time students and 24 months (6 semesters) for part-time students. Each semester comprises of 12 weeks of classes and 2 weeks of exams.

What is the medium of instruction for the programme?

The medium of instruction for the programme is in English.

Do I have to take Arabic Language?

No.

Candidates for the MMgt programme are expected to have a Bachelor’s degree recognised by the Malaysian Government / Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, or by the IIUM Senate as the minimum entry requirement.

International candidates must provide proof of English Language proficiency, either IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL of 213 (computer based) or 550 (paper based) to be considered for admission. Candidates may be required to sit for an English Placement Test (EPT) organised by CELPAD, IIUM, when necessary.

However, if for any reason you need to postpone your admission, please note that you can only postpone your admission for a maximum period of 6 months, after which the offer becomes void.

You will also be required to submit the acceptance letter and make payment of the registration fee in order to confirm your place in the MMgt programme, even if you are requesting postponement of admission.

I am an international student. How do I apply for a student visa?

The Management Centre will apply on your behalf for a student pass. The student pass will allow you to enter Malaysia for 30 days. Once you have registered at the Centre, you may apply for a permanent student visa (renewable) through the International Students Division office, IIUM.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

What are the differences between Ph.D. and DBA programmes?

Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA)
The DBA focuses on managerial relevance and the application of theory to field-based research.  It is designed to advance business/professional management practice, processes and programs, ranging from the management of people to the management of operations and projects.  It allows students to develop their ability to conduct empirical research to unexplored or under-explored apply appropriate research methods to managerial areas questions of interest, often within the student’s own organization.  While the DBA has more practical application in managerial settings, it also prepares graduates for academic careers.
 
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD focuses on the development of new theory, and prepares candidates to conduct highly specialized scholarly research.  Most PhD graduates lead careers as university researchers and professors or as senior researchers in business or government.
The DBA and PhD are academically equivalent in that both entail a rigorous course of study and typically culminate in the defense of a doctoral dissertation.

Is the DBA programme appropriate for educators?

Yes, it is. The DBA programme for the practitioner scholar provides the ideal linkage between theory and practice that is important to effective teaching at any level. Many of our DBA students plan to teach after graduation.

I am interested in obtaining a DBA to assist me in my consulting work. Is this an appropriate degree for me?

Yes, it is. The Consultancy Practice offered in the DBA programme provides ideal training and preparation for a career in consulting.

Do you offer specialization in the programme?

No, we don’t. However, students may choose a specialization in their dissertation.

Where and when are the classes held?

DBA part-time students attend classes from 9.00 am to 12.45 pm and 2.00 pm to 5.45 pm (with 15 minutes break) on Sundays.

DBA classes are held at our main campus in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur.
What is the maximum number of years allowed to complete the programme?

Part-time students are allowed to complete their studies up to 8 years.

Do you offer distance learning mode?

No, we don’t. Students must attend 12-week classes at our campus.

Is a comprehensive examination required as part of the DBA programme?

Yes, it is. There are 7 areas (questions) in the comprehensive examination such as Business Strategies, Economics, Leadership, Finance, Information Technology, Marketing and Accounting. Students should answer 4 questions only in 5 hours.

ADMISSION

When should I apply to the DBA programme?

For July intake, application should arrive by 30 May. For November intake, application should arrive by 30 September.

Do I need a master’s degree before applying to the DBA programme?

Yes, candidates must hold a master’s degree or any professional qualification which is proven equivalent to a master’s degree by a recognized body.

I have a master’s degree in engineering and a couple years of working experience. Can I apply?

Yes, you can. However, you will be required to take pre-requisite classes in MBA programme.

Do I need to take IELTS/TOEFL, and what is an acceptable score?

International applicants must present valid IELTS or TOEFL results in their application. The acceptable score is:

I took my IELTS for my undergraduate admission. Do I have to retake it?

Yes, you have to. Those results are considered invalid.

Do I need to have a dissertation topic before starting the DBA programme?

No, you don’t. Students are encouraged to formulate ideas for the dissertation during the coursework rather than waiting until all of the coursework is completed.

Can I apply online?

Do I need to submit 2 referee forms together with my application?

Yes. Without the two referee evaluations, your application will be considered as incomplete. Recommendation letter is a supporting document and thus will not be considered as a referee report.

Can I defer my admission?

Yes, you can. However, you can only defer once after you have been offered a place. Meaning that, you can only defer to the next intake.

FEES

What is the total cost for the DBA programme?

The total cost for Malaysian students is RM48,000.00. A registration fee of RM3,600.00, which is included in the total cost,  should be paid according to the deadline stated in your offer letter. Meanwhile, the total fee for international students is RM60,000.00.
